Why Should You Read the Bible? | Hebrews 5:12-14

If you have been around for awhile now, you know that Well Read is here to teach you the Bible, why you should read it, and how to read it.

On our first podcast, we answered the question of why you should read the Bible using Well Read’s theme verses, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, but I wanted to answer that question again. This time, you’ll be given ANOTHER reason why you should read the Bible from Hebrews 5:12-14.

"In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil." Hebrews 5:12-14

The author of Hebrews is unknown, but clearly, the people being talked about in these verses were spiritually immature. They didn't understand God's Word. They were like babies!

I think, similar to the people the author of Hebrews is talking about, a lot of people in the American Church are spiritually immature. They have neglected the Word of God and are not eating solid food. They are still on the milk.

What I mean by that is they are not growing spiritually because they are not growing in the Word of God. This is another reason WHY you should read the Bible: it will help you mature in your faith and grow spiritually!

Throughout my life, I have met a lot of people who don't read the Bible because they seem to have this idea of “Well, I’m saved, so I’m good.”

This is strange thinking considering that as a born again believer, it is now your mission to reach lost people around you with the Gospel. How do you plan to do that without being rooted in the Word of God? How do you plan to live a life that honors God without knowing what He says?

Yes, if you are saved, you are "good" because your eternity is sealed. Nothing can change that! But, that does not mean that it is a good idea to neglect growing in your walk with God. When you first got saved, you were an infant: a baby believer! But just as babies grow up, we are to grow in our faith and mature spiritually.

I think the reason we have so many immature Christians today is largely because we have so many Biblically illiterate Christians today. If people were really in God’s Word, we would not see the level of spiritual immaturity that we see today. I believe that wholeheartedly. That's why Isaac and I started Well Read.

Don't misunderstand: I am not suggesting that simply having knowledge about Scripture is evidence for salvation (look at the Pharisees). What I am saying is that if you have a relationship with God and want to grow spiritually, you need to read and know His Word. That is Biblical.

I have personally seen the impact of Scripture on my growth as a believer, and I can say with 100% certainty I would not be where I am right now in my relationship with God without reading, studying, and meditating on His Word.

If you are reading this and thinking, "I'm spiritually immature! I'm not on the solid food!", God has grace for you. Ask Him to forgive you for neglecting growing in your walk with Him and ask Him to help you dig into His Word! You do not need to be a Bible scholar on day one: just take one step in reading the Word of God!
