This past Saturday was my spiritual birthday. 10 years ago, I asked Jesus to be the Lord and Savior of my life, and He brought me from death to life (John 5:24). He gave me eternal life (Romans 6:23). He forgave my sins (1 John 1:9). He took out my heart of stone in my flesh and gave me a heart of flesh; He put a new spirit in me (Ezekiel 36).
He gave me the gift of salvation.
That brings us to my second post in the new Hebrew series. Yeshua. Jesus' Name in Hebrew. Yeshua. I encourage you to say it out loud today. Yeshua. (ישוע)
Yeshua. What makes this Name so special, so significant?
Well, our good friend, (Google Translate haha) can give us some insight. The Hebrew word for "salvation" is ישועה .ישועה looks very similar to ישוע, and there is no coincidence there.
In this article, it is explained that the Name Yeshua in the Hebrew (Jesus) "conveys the idea that God delivers, saves, rescues."
Even His Name tells us exactly who He is and what He wants to do for us if we will simply ask.
The angel said this to Joseph (Jesus' earthly father, not His biological father) of Jesus' birth, "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21 KJV)
They were to call His Name Jesus (Yeshua) because He would save His people from their sins. He was to be called Yeshua because He was the Savior. He was the One who would deliver, rescue, and save.
"And Jesus said unto him 'This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is the son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and save that which was lost'" (Luke 19:9-10 KJV).
Yeshua knew exactly who He was and what His purpose was. He came so that we could be saved from our sin. He came so we would have the chance at relationship with Him and eternal life in Heaven.
Also, note that Yeshua called Himself here the "Son of man." In the Tanakh (Old Testament), a great Jewish man, Daniel, describes the Messiah like this: "I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought Him near before Him. And there was given Him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve Him: His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed." (Daniel 7:13-14). Now, notice that "all people, nations, and languages should serve Him." Check this out in Revelation, "After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands" (Revelation 7:9). The Lamb and the Son of man is Yeshua, the Lamb and the Son of man is Jesus.
The good news I have for you today is that Yeshua is still saving. He is standing with open arms right now, waiting to give you salvation.
10 years ago, I received the free gift of salvation from Yeshua, and it was the best decision of my life. He kept the promise that is in His Name: He delivered me, He saved me, He rescued me. I can tell you from personal experience that His Name is true.
This post was a shorter one today, but it is still so important. If you have never heard Jesus' Name in Hebrew, now you know, and you also now know what His Name literally means. Fellow followers of Jesus, I hope this encourages you in your walk to know your Savior in an even more personal way, and to anyone reading who is not a follower of Jesus, I hope this encourages you to at the very least think about Him. Yeshua. Jesus. There's something about that Name.
