But What If I Didn't Understand My Bible Reading Today?

A common question people have when it comes to growing in their Bible reading is this: "but, what if I read the Bible today and did not understand what I read?".

It is a fair question. The Bible can be hard to understand. I will be the first to admit, I often leave my Old Testament reading for the day with at least some confusion.

If you have read Scripture for long enough, you probably have struggled with this before. So, what is the answer?

You may be tempted to quit reading your Bible because you wonder, "What is the point?". BUT, I want to encourage you to keep opening your Bible because there IS a point.

Now, let's check out what God's Word says:

Isaiah 55:10-11 proclaims, "As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

God's Word will NEVER return void. God's Word does not lose its power because you did not understand it. Even when we read something in our quiet time that we just do not understand, there is still purpose and value in it. We still read the infallible Word of God, and over time, THAT will bring a change in our lives despite our lack of clarity on its exact meaning in the moment.

You can rest in the authority of the Word and trust that even if you did not quite comprehend all of it, God will still use it in your life somehow. And, it might just be that you need to continue the spiritual discipline of reading Scripture, even when you struggle with it, as an act of faith in God's ability to speak through His Word.

It is also important to remind ourselves that as believers, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us! He will help us in our Bible reading and in time, use it to shape us and our actions. You are not alone when you turn to your Bible reading for the day: He is with you!

Maybe, you are new to Bible reading. Or maybe, you have been reading the Word for years, but it just does not come naturally to you. Whatever the case, the Word is true, and God wants to use it in your life!

It can be hard sometimes, but do not give up! Scripture is impacting you even if you cannot see it right now. It has to. It is too powerful not to!
