Wanting Clarity?

Updated: Jun 20, 2020

The past few days something has been on my heart and my mind that I desperately wanted to know if it was from the Lord or not and what exactly He wanted from it. Was He putting it in my thoughts? Was He urging me to do something about it?

Clarity. This was the word I kept mentioning in my prayers and to one of my friends when asking for her opinion. Clarity.

Yes. Surely, clarity was just what I needed. If I just had some more clarity, I would be content and have enough faith to move forward and fully rely on the Lord.

Back in early February, I went through a similar season where I searched long and hard for more of God's direction on my life. It was not until He led me to Exodus 33 that I realized what God was trying to say.

In verses 12 and 13, Moses' words prove to us that he was human just like us. He is frustrated with God's lack on details on what He called Moses to do. I mean, in Moses' defense, God had not even told him who would go with him. Just like I often do, Moses simply requests for God to show him the way.

God's reply to him in verse 14 is so, so God. God simply tells Moses that He will be with him and that He will give him rest. Moses came into the presence of the Lord thinking that he needed more instructions, more details on what exactly God's plan was. God, being God, knew that Moses' real need was time with Him.

What you need is not more clarity: what you need is more of God.

Ultimately, when we are spending intentional time in the presence of the Lord, finding His Will is not as difficult as it is when we are analyzing everything, trying to figure it out ourselves. Walking in step with the Spirit brings more awareness of His voice, and if we can recognize His voice, we will know if and when He is calling us to something.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to know God's way; in fact, I encourage you to search for His Will for your life. But, what if God's Will becomes the desire of your heart so much so that it is even above God Himself? We cannot want the plans more than we want the Planner Himself.

The unknown is scary, and there are sometimes that I wish the Lord would just tell me exactly how my life is going to play out. But that is not God. That is not how He operates. Countless times in Scripture, we find where He asks people to do things with them having no idea what would happen to them afterwards.

Maybe the unknown is the point, though. It would not really be faith if God told us exactly what was going to happen, now would it? When we dig in and decide to trust God without knowing the specifics about the future and what is to come, that is where true faith in the Lord is revealed.

Do not be stressed about the little things; believe that God is going to bring it all together when the timing is right. And believe me, I know it is not always easy to just sit back and expect God to work, but it is possible. More than that, it is worth it because I think the closeness that is found when we choose God's way without even actually knowing what His way is will be the happiest ending of them all.

Let God's reply to Moses be His reply to you, "My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest."
