New Sight, New Life

Updated: Jun 20, 2020

I remember back in fourth grade when I got my first pair of glasses. I spent most of that school year squinting at the board and whispering to my classmates, "What does that say? I can't really see it."

You're probably wondering why I didn't tell my parents or teacher that I was having trouble seeing, but fourth grade me didn't realize anything was wrong. I thought everyone saw like me. I genuinely thought I saw things in the clearest way possible.

One day, we had one of those in-school, quick eye exams. When it was my turn to read off the letters on that infamous poster, I covered my right eye as they said, "Okay, read us the smallest row that you can."

I squinted a bit then mumbled, "I can't."

"What do you mean?"

"I can't see any of them."

I couldn't even see the big E at the top of the poster. It was just a blur. The doctor told me, "Sweetheart, I think you need glasses."

That afternoon, my parents and I went to the eye doctor, and sure enough, I needed glasses. When I put them on for the first time, I gasped and with a smile said, "I never knew you could see like this before!"

The moment I came to know Jesus was a lot like that.

I think most, if not all, lost people are a lot like fourth grade me; they think their life is going great and that they have everything they need. However, they probably spend most of their time asking other people or things to fill the hole in their hearts only God can: the same way I kept squinting at the board and asking for help.

Just like I needed someone to tell me, "Sweetheart, I think you need glasses," we have to spread the Gospel and explain to people their need for Jesus.

I became a Christian in the fifth grade, and accepting Jesus into my heart opened my eyes to the life I was always meant to live.

A life with Jesus is filled with love, joy, peace, and purpose. There was no way I could ever want to go back to my old life before I knew Him. I finally experienced life the way God intended it, and it is good. Just like when I finally experienced what it was like to see clearly.

It is so easy to forget that we are called to be the light of the world, but it is also so important that we don't forget. Keep smiling at the people who walk by you. Keep holding the door open for people. Keep inviting people to church. Keep going out of your way to love that person who doesn't make it easy to love them. This is how we will reach them.

In this week's post, I told the stories of when I received perfect physical sight as well as my spiritual sight. Getting glasses was important, but getting saved was even more important in my life's journey.

If you are an unbeliever and have never made the decision to follow Jesus, I invite you today to choose Him and find eternal life as well as life on earth filled with joy like you have never felt before. It is not difficult to accept Christ; you just believe in your heart He is who He says He is and ask Him for forgiveness. It really is that simple.

When you make that choice, you can put on the Gospel Glasses and see this life how God always intended us to see it.
